Coherency Identification in Interconnected Power Systems - An Independent Component Analysis Approach

, IEEE Transactions on Power Systems, Vol: 28, Pages: 1747-1756, ISSN: 0885-8950

This paper presents a novel approach to the coherency identification technique in interconnected power system using independent component analysis (ICA). The ICA is applied to the generator speed and bus angle data to identify the coherent areas of the system. The results of the application of ICA using simulated data from 16-machine 68-bus system model and on data gathered through U.K. University-based Wide-Area Measurement System are presented. The approach is able to identify the cluster of generators and buses following a disturbance in the system. It is also demonstrated that the approach is robust in the presence of noise in measured signal, which is an important factor to be considered for assessing the effectiveness of any measurement-based technique.

    Power System Control

Summary of InventionIn accordance with an aspect of the invention there is provided a method for allocating a plurality of power reserves to deliver power to a power network to meet a power reserve requirement for balancing a frequency of the power network. The method comprises obtaining, for a plurality of power reserves of a power network, power reserve flexibility characteristics associated with each power reserve. The method further comprises obtaining, for the plurality of power reserves, an indexing value associated with the delivery of power by each of the power reserves. The method further comprises determining a power reserve requirement associated with the power network. The method further comprises assigning one or more of the plurality of power reserves to deliver power to the power network, the plurality of power reserves assigned in accordance with the power reserve flexibility characteristics associated with each of the power reserves, the indexing value associated with each of the power reserves, and the power reserve requirement associated with the power network. The power reserve flexibility characteristics may be indicative of power deliverable to the power network by the respective power reserve with respect to time. The power reserve flexibility characteristics may include characteristics of positive and/or negative power reserve flexibility. The power reserve flexibility characteristics may include one or more of a maximum deliverable power, a period of time to provide the maximum deliverable power from receipt of an instruction for power delivery, a minimum duration for sustaining the maximum deliverable power and a period of time to reduce power delivery from the maximum deliverable power to a minimum deliverable power. The assigning of one or more of the plurality of power reserves may further comprise selecting one or more of the plurality power reserves to provide the power reserve requirement in order of the indexing value associated with t

Robust Feedback Model Predictive Control of Constrained Uncertain Systems

, Journal of Process Control, Vol: 23, Pages: 189-200

We propose a novel procedure for the solution to the problem of robust model predictive control (RMPC) of linear discrete time systems involving bounded disturbances and model-uncertainties along with hard constraints on the input and state. The RMPC (outer) controller - responsible for steering the uncertain system state to a designed invariant (terminal) set - has a mixed structure consisting of a state-feedback component as well as a control-perturbation. Both components are explicitly considered as decision variables in the online optimization and the nonlinearities commonly associated with such a state-feedback parameterization are avoided by adopting a sequential approach in the formulation. The RMPC controller minimizes an upper bound on an H2/H_infinity-based cost function. Moreover, the proposed algorithm does not require any offline calculation of (feasible) feedback gains for the computation of the RMPC controller. The optimal Robust Positively invariant set and the inner controller - responsible for keeping the state within the invariant set - are both computed in one step as solutions to an LMI optimization problem. We also provide conditions which guarantee the Lyapunov stability of the closed-loop system. Numerical examples, taken from the literature, demonstrate the advantages of the proposed scheme.

Approximate finite-horizon optimal control for input-affine nonlinear systems with input constraints

    , Pages: 199-204, ISSN: 1474-6670

The finite-horizon optimal control problem with input constraints consists in controlling the state of a dynamical system over a finite time interval (possibly unknown) minimizing a cost functional, while satisfying hard constraints on the input. For linear systems the solution of the problem often relies upon the use of bang-bang control signals. For nonlinear systems the "shape" of the optimal input is in general not known. The control input can be found solving an Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman (HJB) partial differential equation (pde): it typically consists of a combination of bang-bang arcs and singular arcs. In the paper a methodology to approximate the solution of the HJB pde arising in the finite-horizon optimal control problem with input constraints is proposed. This approximation yields a dynamic state feedback law. The theory is illustrated by means of an example: the minimum time optimal control problem for an industrial wastewater treatment plant. © IFAC.

On convergence of averagely constrained economic MPC and necessity of dissipativity for optimal steady-state operation

, Proceedings of the American Control Conference, Pages: 3141-3146, ISSN: 0743-1619

The contribution of this paper is twofold. First, we discuss necessity of a dissipativity condition which was recently used to prove optimal operation of a system at steady-state in an economic MPC framework. We illustrate with several examples that this dissipativity condition is not necessary, but comes close to being so in a certain sense. Second, we provide a Lyapunov-like stability analysis for averagely constrained economic model predictive control. This closes a gap which was left open in a recent paper on economic MPC. © 2013 AACC American Automatic Control Council.
