ESE Writing Competition 2024
Join us for the ESE Writing Competition, an opportunity to explore and communicate the importance of Earth science and engineering.
The competition is open to all ESE staff and students who want to showcase and develop their writing skills to communicate research concepts to non-specialist audiences.
The competition encourages creativity and clarity in communicating science, with judges assessing these key qualities.
The competition theme for 2024 is ‘The Future of Earth Science and Society’.
Participants are encouraged to write about the evolving relationship between Earth sciences and society, focusing on challenges like climate change and sustainability.
Competition details
- Entrants must be staff or students at the Department of Earth Science and Engineering.
- Entrants can write about any aspect or topic relating to the future of Earth sciences and society.
- Entries should be aimed at a lay audience.
- Word count: Entries must be no longer than 1,200 words and must include a title/heading.
- Submission deadline: 1st of November 2024.
- All submissions must be original and not published anywhere else.

First Prize: £200
Second Prize: £100
Third Prize: £50
Entries will be judged on their clear and concise explanation of a scientific topic for a lay audience, as well as on a creative and coherent narrative structure.
Winners of the writing competition will be announced via ESE’s social media channels. The top three entries will be published in I,SCIENCE magazine. Other top entries will also be published in ESE’s blog.
