Abstract

In 1996, US president Bill Clinton announced that the Global Positioning System (GPS) would be made available to civilians around the world. Over the years, GPS has helped to enable services like Google Maps, products like remote-controlled aeroplanes and even games like Pokemon Go.

20 years later, we are starting to see the emergence of a new type of positioning system, one with is based on computer vision. In this talk, we will look at some of the state-of-the-art mapping technologies which will pave the way for next-generation augmented reality for years to come.
