The ICTU-Surgery therapeutic area is focused on driving increased activity and efficiencies including innovative trial design and delivery, to enable key questions to be answered quickly and robustly. Innovative trials designs that we have used in our surgery portfolio include preference-based randomisations (CHRONOS-A), multi-arm randomised control trial (MAMS) (CHRONOS-B), dual consent randomised invitation cohort multiple randomised control trial (PROSPECT).

The team are experienced in mitigating the challenges of designing, developing and delivering robust surgical trials, including managing side-effects, equipoise, randomisation, consistency, learning curve and quality control, anaesthetic and other regimens, and blinding such as surgical placebo (EMBIO). Expertise in biomarkers, diagnostics and AI is also established through links to our NIHR MedTech and In vitro diagnostics Co-operatives (MICs) (Hanna). This is augmented by multidisciplinary research excellence in surgical technology and engineering and complex interventions within our South Kensington and Imperial West campuses.
