AB - A cochlear implant system for implanting into a user, the system comprising a microphone, signal processing means for converting a signal output from the microphone into a set of signals having different centre frequencies, electrodes for stimulating neurons in the cochlear, and signal distribution means for distributing the set of signals to the electrodes, the microphone, signal processing means, signal distribution means and electrodes all being implantable, wherein the signal processing means is configured to provide an output which will be acceptable to some users, and the implant is further provided with means for receiving a signal generated by an external microphone and external signal processing means, the implantable system being provided with control means operative to pass the externally generated signal to the signal distribution means.
