I am a second year PhD student at the Intelligent Systems and Networks Group. I am from Greece, I grew up in Athens and graduated from the National Technical University of Athens with an Integrated MEng in Electrical and Computer Engineering.
Interview with Semina
Hear from Semina, who's research focuses on the combination of artificial intelligence with social influence for collective decision making
Education
GCSE (or equivalent): Computer science, Engineering, Computing, Design and Technology
A-Level (or equivalent): Information Theory, Computer Science, Design and Technology
Degrees:
• BSc & MEng in Electrical and Computer Engineering, National Technical University of Athens, Greece
• MSc in Applied Machine Learning, Imperial College London
• PhD in the formalisation of theories of social influence for collective decision making (ongoing), Imperial College London
Detail about Semina
My research
Inspired by theories of social influence, I am developing algorithms and systems for collective decision making. Examples of real-life applications could include collective decision making for people in a committee or for computer processors that need to distribute some common resources.
My inspiration
During the last year of high school, I took a programming class, and the professor really inspired me to study computer engineering. However, the person that motivated me to get into Artificial Intelligence was the supervisor of my MEng thesis who showed me how AI can solve challenging real-life problems.
Who is your STEM hero?
My STEM hero is not a famous researcher or a person that influences public opinions but is actually my mother. She is a skilful woman who was working as a Solutions Analyst in the National Bank of Greece, designing algorithms for the operations of the company.
Most significant discovery/invention?
The Turing Machine build the foundation for the modern personal computer (PC), since it was the first mathematical model of computation that describes an abstract machine that does computations using symbols.
Career options after study
- Researcher at a research institution
- Academic at a university
- Machine learning engineer in a software company
- Product manager in an IT company
- Artificial Intelligence Consultant
My hobbies
Going to the gym, meeting friends, and traveling.
Semina talks about her research
Semina talks about her research to understand how humans interact and influence each other to make collective decisions and then design AI systems to teach machines to imitate these actions.
