The Council


The Council is the governing body of the University. Its powers, functions and composition are set out in the Charter & Statutes. It is responsible for overseeing the strategic direction and finances of Imperial, for the efficient management and good conduct of the affairs of the University, and for oversight of its governance and compliance. 

On matters of academic policy, the Council is advised by the Senate. The Council normally meets five times per year, plus an annual strategy day, which is also attended by members of the University Management Board.

Council committees

The Council is supported by the Committees set out below. All have approved terms of reference and specified membership, including independent and co-opted members to provide expert support. They are all chaired by independent members if the Council and report regularly to the Council on their work.
