Printmaking is one of the most instantly rewarding forms of image-making, with a history that goes back over a thousand years, and still going strong today.

Renowned artist Angela A'Court invites you to join her every week to learn various printmaking techniques, through which you will have the opportunity to create interesting and effective images in a relatively short period of time. This craft also offers you the opportunity to develop techniques and skills further, giving you a lifetime of creative interest.

On this course our aim is to give you the experience and confidence to start printmaking and produce interesting images.

We will provide you with a basic introduction to a selection of printmaking techniques, which will be:

  • Monotype
  • Block Printing
  • Lino Cut
  • Soft Pastel Screen Printing.

Through hands-on workshops demonstrating and practising the four different methods our aim is to help you tol become familiar with the essential properties of printmaking and and to put what you learn into practice over the 10 week course, enabling you to continue developing the craft of printmaking at home if you want to, or you can go on to develop your knowledge and skills further with further study.

With printmaking you do not need any previous experience of art or craft and you do not need drawing skills. Everyone is welcome!

All material costs are included in the course fee for this course.

Course Information

Course Programme and Materials

Course programme (may be subject to some modification)

The course programme will be partly dictated by the specific class dynamics, so we will progress at the most appropriate speed for the class. Our aim is to try to explore four type of printmaking technique:

The four techniques are:

  • Monotype:

Monotype is a one of kind print that is unique - it is also easy and contagious! Using a sheet of acetate, we will begin by applying ink in a gestural way to create an image before taking an impression on paper.

  • Block Printing:

Block Printing is one of the earliest forms of creating patterned printing on fabric. Traditionally wooden blocks would be carved with designs. We will be making our blocks without carving and instead applying ready made materials to the blocks  to enable printing on to fabric.

  • Linocut

Linocut is a method of relief printing that is usually characterized by flat, clearly delineated areas of colour. An image is cut or gouged from a sheet of linoleum, which is softer and easier to carve than wood.  The surface is inked and paper laid on top to create a print of your image.

  • Monotype Screen Printing with Soft Pastels.

This is a great way of producing a series of quick and spontaneous prints. Using small silk screens we will be using soft pastels to apply marks or an image directly on to the dry screen. The screen is then placed on paper and a transparent ink is used to pull the pastel through on to paper.

  • Materials

All materials are included in the course fee.

Not included: Please bring clothing or protectivewear that you do not mind getting dirty. We will be using printing inks so appropriate clothing or protection such as aprons are essential.
