Welcome to this French Level 4 course, designed to provide you with the opportunity to improve your speaking, reading, listening and writing skills so that you can interact in French in common social everyday life contexts.

Upon completion of this course you should be able to perform at Level B1+ of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

Our approach following communicative and active learning methodologies ensures that you engage with a wide range of tasks and activities covering all four skills (reading, writing, listening and speaking). These activities will include pair work and groupwork; discovery and formulation of grammatical rules; work with texts and a range of audio-visual material to encourage lively participation.

You will develop all necessary skills to communicate in French in a wide range of common everyday life contexts and to discuss topical issues. You will be able to describe events and experiences, debate ideas, comparing, contrasting, and expressing personal opinions. You will also extend your background knowledge of France and French-speaking countries and demonstrate intercultural awareness in the handling of everyday social interactions in French.

On this course, you will cover the following linguistic structures: revision of tenses: use of perfect, imperfect in past narratives, future, conditional; expression of condition – si clauses; revision and further study of pronouns (direct, indirect and relative); comparative and superlative forms; negative clauses; expressions of cause and consequence, purpose, opposition and opinion; passive form; modal verbs; infinitive; introduction to the subjunctive mood and its use.

These linguistic structures will be applied to the following topics: everyday life and culture, education, work, identities, nationalities, and citizenship, consumer society and environmental issues, tourism, media and new technologies, current affairs in France and French-speaking countries.
