“Imperial is a community of people from different backgrounds and experiences and so we are not always going to agree or do things in the same way, but our shared values provide us with a common goal to strive towards.” Professor Lesley Cohen and Dr Wayne Mitchell Associate Provosts for Equality, Diversity and Inclusion

Professor Lesley Cohen and Dr Wayne Mitchell took up the role of Associate Provost for Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) in September 2023. A few months in, they reflect on the impact of the Values and how they would like to see the Values used going forward.

Reflecting on her experience working at Imperial, Lesley said: “My years as a consul taught me that respect and integrity are extremely important aspects to bring forward in all interactions. And of course from my academic work, collaboration, innovation and excellence are essential both within my own research team and with those with whom we work.”

Wayne, who alongside his academic work in immunology and inflammation, has chaired the Imperial As One race equality network for staff and postgraduate students for a number of years, said: “Imperial is a community of people from different backgrounds and experiences and so we are not always going to agree or do things in the same way, but our shared values provide us with a common goal to strive towards.”

The Values are continuing to be key as Lesley meets new colleagues in her role as Associate Provost for EDI: “Wayne and I are meeting many different groups of people whose experience of life at Imperial is very different to my own. I hugely admire their journey and I am interested to understand how Imperial can support underrepresented groups more effectively. Integrity and respect play an essential role in these conversations.”

Looking ahead, Wayne and Lesley see an important role for the Values in continuing to improve the culture at Imperial and make it a place where everyone can thrive. Lesley says: “I think it is early days yet, but I have noticed that a reference to the Values helps calm down otherwise potentially difficult situations.”

Wayne said: “The Values are like universal guidance on how to be an ally to colleagues from underrepresented groups. If you are acting in line with the Values, then you are being an ally.

“Our Values should promote inclusive practices where everyone has an opportunity to be recognized and celebrated for their contributions to making the community function. We are still on the road to making this a reality.”
