Dear all,
As I begin my tenure as President of Imperial College London I feel immensely privileged to be leading one of the world’s greatest research universities, and a place that’s really making a difference to people’s lives.
During these challenging past few years I have been impressed by Imperial’s flexibility and innovation, and the results achieved. From your sector-leading commitment to teaching during lockdown to your vital contribution to the global pandemic response. There is lots to be proud of.
Imperial’s many successes are down to the hard work and dedication of its staff and students – they are down to you. As I explore Imperial’s campuses over the coming months I will be listening and learning about your ambitions and how I can help you achieve them.
As President my job is to nurture an environment that supports staff and students to realise their potential, achieve their goals, and continue to deliver solutions that help create a better society and a better planet.
I also want to hear how we can build an even more inclusive, diverse and supportive College community. I truly believe that doing this will make Imperial an even better place for all of us to work and study.
I had the pleasure of talking about some of these things with Dr Jess Wade from the Department of Physics a few weeks ago. You can see a video of our conversation below. I hope this will help you get to know me a bit, before I have the chance to meet you in person.
I would like to thank Alice Gast, Ian Walmsley and the College leadership for steering Imperial through challenging times and give my thanks to you all for the warm welcome. It’s truly a privilege for me to be here among you.
Best wishes,
Hugh
