Achieving buildability and robustness in demountable precast buildings
Started: October 2018
Supervisor: Dr Robert Vollum
Industry Partner: Laing O'Rourke
Description of Research
Due to the increasing needs to enhance productivity, new sustainable construction technologies have to be developed. This can be achieved through a novel approach of product-based design. Demountable precast buildings are structures which can be easily and quickly assembled onsite, and are equally simple to deconstruct at the end of the building’s life. The primary purpose of this research is to develop the overall design methodology of such structures. This includes the approach to disproportional collapse, jointing system and components, which have to be validated through modelling and experimental testing. The research is done closely with the Engineering Excellence Team at Laing O’Rourke.
