The HIE Research Group, led by Professor Sudhin Thayyil, is the only research group globally focused specifically on birth-related brain injury, known as HIE (Hypoxic-Ischaemic Encephalopathy). This condition affects millions of babies each year. Our multidisciplinary team brings together clinicians, nurses, scientists, engineers, social scientists, qualitative researchers, parents, and local communities, all working collaboratively to develop innovative solutions for improving neonatal care and addressing global health disparities. We place a strong emphasis on equitable partnerships with researchers from low- and middle-income countries.

We have led several landmark clinical trials, including the largest study on induced hypothermia for HIE, as well as research on magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) biomarkers and intrapartum brain injury. These studies have had a significant impact on clinical practice worldwide. Our team has secured over £20 million in research grants, published extensively in high-impact journals such as The Lancet, and received more than several external fellowships (pre-doctoral, doctoral, and post-doctoral) in the past five years.

Through this pioneering, world-leading approach, our goal is to transform neonatal care and ensure that every infant, no matter where they are born, has the best possible chance for a healthy future
