Children and young people (CYP) account for over 20% of the UK population, over 10% of healthcare spending but only around 5% of health research funding. Increasing participation of CYP in research could lead to more effective and evidence-based intervention to address challenges such as young people's mental health and growing inequalities.
Together with our community partners: Acton Youth Association, Ealing and Hounslow Community Voluntary Service (EHCVS), Harrow Club, Listen to Act, Mosaic Community Trust, Nova and Wealdstone Baby Bank and colleagues at National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) Applied Research Collaboration (ARC) in Northwest London and the Association for Young People's Health, we have been able to unpick some of the barriers to diverse and representative research engagement among children and young people (0-18 years).
This work has been supported by NHS England's Research Engagement Network.
