Jad wins the Basu Prize and Best FYP award
Jad Maqdah's Final Year Project won the Amiya Basu Prize for use of AI Technologies in Civil Engineering as well as the Best Final Year Project in Structures at Imperial College London. For his project, supervised by Dr Málaga and carried out in collaboration with Drs Memarzadeh from NASA's Ames Research Center in the USA and Kampas from RCube in Greece, Jad built an unsupervised machine learning model capable of detecting patterns in- and differentiating between innovative arch shapes and contours to be built out of Lunar or Martian regolith and suitable to resist the harsh environments of extra-terrestrial construction. Jad has consistently been ranked in the departmental Dean's List and has also received the Sparkes-Pippard Prize for the best MEng Student in Structural Engineering in the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering at Imperial. His work will be presented in the next edition of the ICONHIC conference to be carried out in Athens later this year where a Special Session on Structural Design for Extra-terrestrial Natural Hazards is being organized.
