Call for Submissions: Research Computing Summer School - Research Software Session - 27th Sep 2018, 2pm-5.30pm
As part of the 2018 Imperial College Research Computing Summer School, a Research Software Engineering (RSE) session will take place on the afternoon of Thursday 27th September 2018 run by Imperial's Research Software Community.
The concept of Research Software Engineering has developed over the last six years and is now widely recognised as an important element of research in a range of domains. While researchers have been writing software in some domains for decades, the ubiquity of software within many fields means that there is now a stronger awareness of the benefits that come from good quality software development. This is software development which uses best practices and applies specialist skills and expertise to support better quality, more sustainable, reliable and reproducible research.
We are accepting submission of abstracts for the presentation of posters or lightning talks at the Summer School RSE session. Submissions should cover research software work or perspectives in areas including, but not limited to:
- Development of software tools or libraries that have had a transformative effect on how a research group or team undertakes their research work
- Different approaches to building software in research
- Bringing research software engineering practices to new fields or domains
- Experiences of working with an RSE team or a professional RSE
- Code analysis and testing for improved software reliability
- How your research team uses modern software tools to support their development workflow
- Challenges in building software to support computational research
Lightning talks: Lightning talks will be given four minutes and the opportunity to show two slides. You should submit a 1 paragraph description of your talk highlighting the key points and its relevance to those interested in research software engineering.
Posters: A short 1 paragraph abstract should be submitted explaining the key message of the poster and its main content. Posters may be A1 or A0 size and will be displayed as part of the drinks reception towards the end of the session where presenters will have a chance to discuss their poster with other attendees.
Publication: Submitted/presented materials will not be officially published. However, accepted abstracts will be placed online alongside the workshop schedule and posters may be made available on the RSE community website with the authors' consent.
Reviews: There will be no official review process and we are keen to receive submissions from anyone who would like to present their work to the local community. There will however be a lightweight process of checking submissions to ensure that they are in scope for the session. In the event that we are oversubscribed, the RSE community committee will select a set of lightning talks and posters which represent a wide range of topics.
Important dates:
Deadline for submission of abstracts for lightning talks/posters: Thursday 6th September Monday 10th September (extended submission deadline)
Confirmation of acceptance: Wednesday 12th September
Submission: Please submit your abstracts by e-mail to rse-events@imperial.ac.uk.
If you have any questions, you can contact the Imperial RSE community committee at rse-committee@imperial.ac.uk
