Georgina Ferry

The Charmian Brinson Honorary Lecture is an annual, free lecture where the Centre for Languages, Culture and Communication (CLCC) welcomes an external speaker to discuss a relevant topic of their choice. This year, science writer-author-broadcaster Georgina Ferry will deliver her talk entitled:

From jack-of-all-trades to multi-hyphenate: channel-switching in science communication

Our Charmian Brinson Honorary Guest Lecturers have one thing in common: they have not followed advice to ‘stay in your lane’, but have developed a range of skills that have enabled them to share their expertise with wide audiences. In her 2024 annual lecture, science writer-author-broadcaster Georgina Ferry will reflect on her 45 years in science communication to discuss what it means to be a ‘multi-hyphenate’ in the field today.

Georgina Ferry Bio

After graduating in Experimental Psychology, Georgina Ferry learned her trade as a staff editor and feature writer on New Scientist and presenting science programmes on BBC Radio.

As her foremost biographer, Georgina is often called upon to deliver talks about Hodgkin and contributes to panel debates, podcasts and even plays about the Nobel prizewinner.

Georgina has published several further books on 20th and 21st-century science, as well as making detours into public relations and oral history. She is a regular contributor of reviews, obituaries and features to publications including The Guardian, Nature and The Lancet.
